Who would have imagined that the denial of such a considerate gesture would result in the burning of the only suspension bridge ever built in Cleveland, Ohio.
But there it is.
That phrase (or something very close to it) is what sparked the Hough Rebellion (or what some would call the Hough Riots) – a white Hough bar owner refused to give a glass of water to a black patron which unleashed the racial tension which had been building-up over police harassment, substandard housing, and exploitative business practices.
...and how ironic that the purpose of the Sidaway Bridge was to bring together the peoples of the Jackowo Polish and Kinsman Road neighborhoods.
Now, just over fifty years later, there is a concerted effort to symbolically and physically reclaim the Sidaway Bridge’s legacy for its original purpose – bringing people together.
With the collaboration of Burten, Bell, Carr Development Corporation, The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Deep Dive Art Projects, the Slavic Village Development Corporation, with support from Organic Connects, we are bringing together the families and friends of these great neighborhoods in a series of exciting and life-changing experiences!
Register to stay in the know and get first dibs on the mouth-watering, foot-pounding, and awesome art projects to be part of this amazing experience.
